We are so very sorry to hear of Howard's passing. Howard was a dear friend to my father, Jack, and visited him throughout his illness two years ago. Howard was an outstanding gentleman with a great personality and sense of humor. Our deepest condolences to Janet and the Heller family.
Although Howard will be missed, his memory will be treasured.
Love, The Stephans family.

In the years I was lucky enough to be friends with Howard and Janet, we had the opportunity to spend lots of time together. One of my most favorite memories was when we celebrated Howard's birthday at a very fancy restaurant.... Wendy's! Howard treated us to burgers and frostys and it was just so much fun! He said it was his favorite birthday celebration, only second to his Bar Mitzvah! Howard's sense of humor, generosity and sense of importance of friends and family made him so special and made others feel special too. He was a true gem and I will miss him immensely.
Love,
Jamie Messina

I was saddened to hear the news of Howard’s passing and send my deepest sympathies to his family, beloved wife Janet, Max, Melani, and Paige. He loved them all greatly and will never be forgotten.
I met Howard while working in the West Milford school district and we had stayed in contact ever since. What was not to like about Howard? He had a wonderful sense of humor and his many stories on life, education, and people were always profound, interesting, and entertaining. In my professional career and personally, I have never known a more caring and mentoring person. Howard became a friend, mentor and family to me when I needed support during tough times. This even when he was dealing with his own health issues. I have only known two other people, my own mother and father who have shown such love and strength through their illnesses as Howard did. He fought the good fight for his family and because he could do no less, that’s the type of man Howard was. To my close friend, mentor in all things, and a surrogate father to me, rest in peace. I well never forget you and your kindness.

This photo is from November 10, 2017. It was a celebration dinner at the restaurant Per Se in NYC with Howard and the dream team. Howard was such a source of strength for me during some of the most challenging times. I was so thrilled to have him as my guest of honor at this dinner. Howard was my "Pal." He was a great mentor, a loyal friend, a surrogate father to me, the funniest person I knew, and just one of the best humans I have ever known. We would put on our Sunday best and meet at a fabulous restaurant in NYC to catch up, share stories, and laugh throughout the years. Howard had the best stories and was a fantastic storyteller! He was a close friend I loved, and I will cherish all the great memories. Rest in peace, Pal. I am sending my deepest sympathies to his beloved wife Janet, Max, Melani, and Paige, his shining star.

I knew Howard only in his professional career for about two years. I found him to be a resolute professional educator especially for those students that were most in need.
He was a trustworthy colleague, a team player and humorous when a laugh was needed. Most of all as a friend. His life story made him unique, but he never lost sight of his purpose in life. He will be remembered fondly by students, teachers, staff members, parents, administrators, Board of Education members and this Interim Superintendent of Schools.
My heartfelt condolences to Janet, Max, Melani and his pride and joy Paige.
