I was a shy, teenage kid back in 1978 when I first met Danny. He welcomed me without hesitation, his good nature ribbing and easy going manner put me right at ease. I considered him a friend and looked forward to seeing him each of the following summers. Time passes; I moved to Massachusetts, married, kids and life “got busy”. Years pass and over the years, even given chances of getting together, we never did meet again. Life takes us on different paths. Though it has been years since I have seen him, I know if given the chance to talk again it would be as natural as it once was.
I was blessed to have had a memorable childhood and the summer’s people write about. Danny was a part of period that I will always treasure. All I need to do is close my eyes and I can see him as clear as day on the porch of that cottage gearing up to go fishing, smile on his face convinced that he was coming back with the big one. I can’t think of a time that he didn’t greet me with a warm welcome and a smile.
As my friends know I quote movies and songs often, signs that I spent way too much time watching TV in my youth :). From one of my favorite musicals, RENT, Seasons of Love, I think the following fits well…
It's time now to sing out,
Tho' the story never ends
Let's celebrate
Remember a year in the life of friends
Remember the love!
Remember the love!
Seasons of love!
Oh you got to got to
Remember the love!
You know that love is a gift from up above
Share love, give love spread love
Measure measure your life in love
Though way too short, but given any measure, especially love, Danny’s life was one well lived.
Take care Danny, you will always be part of my memories and I know I’m better for knowing you…
