Obituary of John J. Cadden

Dr. John Joseph Cadden (PhD), born January 2, 1924, died at his home in Huntington on July 15, at the age of 88 years. Dr. Cadden was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, to Michael and Rebecca, and attended Benedictine High School in Ohio. He later obtained a doctorate in English Literature from St. John's University. A pioneer in education on Long Island, Dr. Cadden began his career in Levittown. He later founded the Humanities department at Nassau Community College where he chaired the English department and was president of the Faculty Senate. Dr. Cadden was fluent in five languages including Middle Italian which he learned so that he could read Dante in the original. He published a number of works including Science and Literature. Dr. Cadden later served as Dean of Faculty at Mercer County Community College in New Jersey. He was appointed Assistant Superintendent of Hicksville School District and Superintendent of Carle Place School District. After retiring, Dr. Cadden, who never lost his love of the classroom, taught at a number of local colleges and became an English teacher at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay. He was a daily communicant at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Centerport where he was active in the RCIA program which assists individuals wishing to convert to Catholicism and was a member of the church choir. Dr. Cadden is survived by his wife of 60 years, Phyllis, and five children, Marian Rose Tinari (Frank), Kerry Ann Cadden (David Borowski), Sheila Marie Sullivan (Charles), Nancy Patricia Cadden and Kevin Patrick Cadden as well as seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Tomaszewski and brother William and predeceased by sisters Mary Ferguson, Margaret Troy and Ann Marie Cadden. Reposing Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport, NY Wednesday, 2-5 & 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Centerport, Thursday 10 AM with Msgr. T. Peter Ryan P.E. officiating. Interment to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington, NY.
