Obituary of Jacqueline M. Jones

On February 4th Jacqueline Jones died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 17, 2016 in Dole, France and was the only child of Frantz and Marthe Cathelin. She spent her childhood in Lyon and then moved to Salins-les-Bains in the Jura Mountains during the Depression. Her family experienced great hardships during WWII while their town was under German occupation so she rode her bicycle into the mountains where she tended a vegetable garden to help to feed her family. At the end of the war she met her beloved husband, Arthur Jones, when he was a GI stationed in France. After their marriage in France, she travelled to Bremerhaven, Germany where she boarded the USNS George W. Goethals, a naval troop transport vessel which was used to transport foreign war brides to the United States at the end of the war. She and Arthur initially settled in New York City where she was fascinated by washing machines, traffic signals, the NYC subway system and the abundance and variety of food and clothing. She also was enchanted by the beauty of the many small villages lining the Hudson River. They later moved to Huntington where she raised her four children and worked as a local real estate agent. She was active in the garden club and Boy Scouts. She had a love for animals and provided shelter for the many homeless animals which her children brought home from local fairs or Girl Scout camp. Her favorite pet, however, was a large rabbit which showed up in her yard one cold winter day. She was an accomplished pianist, artist, gardener and seamstress. She loved her life in the United States, but she continued to value her French heritage and shared many of her French customs with her family and friends. During her long life she continued to maintain contact with those friends and relatives whom she had left behind in France. She also never lost touch with those women whom she had met on that initial ocean voyage to the States or who were active in the foreign war brides’ clubs she joined when she arrived in New York. She was a lifelong learner who enjoyed listening to lectures on science and the arts. She also participated in library trips where she visited museums and attended musical productions in New York City. She often would be found at her dining room table reading magazines and newspapers and cutting out articles of interest to share with her family and friends. Her greatest pleasure, however, was traveling and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Arthur, and son-in-law John Moseley. Her survivors include her son Richard Jones and his wife Marianne; and her daughters Francoise Moseley; Colette Jones; and Monique Turner and her husband Dixon. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren: Justin and Ethan Moseley; Kimberly Meurillon; Bryce Turner, Jacqueline Turner; and Richard Jones. She had 3 great grandchildren: Amara, Ava and Aubri Moseley. She lived a long and wondrous life and will be greatly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Funeral arrangements were provided by Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home in Northport, NY. Donations in her memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimers Association.
