best friend, best buddy, college roommates for 5 years, meeting him in the fall of 1963 at the Univ. of Miami, and developed a close friendship with him which continued until his tragic death. best man at his wedding and he at mine, phone calls, visits to my place in ct. to the local fairs, and yearly get togethers for alumni reunion at the U in Coral Gables, Florida. He became an integral part of my life and with his death has left a void in my life that cant be replaced. Jan, was his name but we called each other by our last names, shared private matters with each other and would trust him with my life, like a brother or deeper. I feel such an emptiness in my life without him, and will never get over this tragic event, and is still unbelievable it ever happened.
I know this loss is so tragic but feel even worse for his beloved family, JJ, Kris, and Anna, as well as his girlfriend,Linda and for Debbie, and Maggie, as there was a place in their hearts even with the differences with him. He was a special guy, never said or heard him say bad things about anyone, never really saw him angry, good natured guy, friendly, dedicated dad, unless you were a Clinton voter. I was always amazed how lousy he played golf, but he always persevered in his play, but it wasnt the golf that was bonding us, it was our friendship just being out on the course together, A true void is in my heart, missing my dear friend, he was just so supportive in my life, being at my daughter's wedding, funerals for my mom, and brother, the list goes on. Till we meet again in a special place, miss you until then,
L

Mom and I send our warm love and support to my wonderful new son-in-law, Jan, Kris, Anna, Maggie, Brigitte and all the Kalas family, including my daughter, Allie. We genuinely feel blessed to have called Jan our fun friend and new family member. When my parents and I met him for the first time during 2012 Thanksgiving weekend here in Houston, it was as if we had known Jan for years. We will deeply miss his warm embracing manner and grand smile but as Mom reminded me, we will cherish the recent wedding memories we shared with Jan in Costa Rica, and Jan & Linda in Santa Barbara.
Love to our Kalas family from Texas.
