Obituary of Geraldine L. Murphy
Geraldine “Gerry” Murphy, who worked as a police reporter in Chicago during the 1940s, died Sunday at Hospice House in Northport. She was 93.
Born Geraldine L. Trager in Peoria, Ill., she attended the University of Chicago, where she earned a degree in Philosophy. She worked as a reporter for several news organizations, including the City News Bureau of Chicago and the Associated Press. Gerry finished her working career at Western Suffolk BOCES, where she was an assistant purchasing agent. She was a volunteer for many years with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Gerry married John R. Murphy and has four children, Gavin, Timothy, Brendan and Ann. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, including Heather, Danella, Jessica, Timothy, Rachel, Gillian, Sean, Evan and Laura and six great grandchildren.
Visiting will be held at Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home in Northport on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm and Wednesday from 2-5 & 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be held 10 am Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Greenlawn.
