I just learned of Phil's passing yesterday. I'm 68 and I've never met a better person than Phil Messina. Ironically, I was playing the third hole at Fiddlers Creek where Phil and Phyllis have a home when I asked one of the guys in our group if he knew Phil. He told me the sad news.
I recall the first time I met Phil very clearly. We just signed up to play golf together one morning without knowing each other. We formed such a nice bond. So easy, so natural. I will never forget what he said the next time we played. It fit's so well with what was written here about him and how he made everyone feel special. He told me " After we played, I went home and told Phyillis I met a new friend at the course today!. He said, "I felt like a child who went to school and didn't know that many other kids and then today I met and found a great friend" I felt special and still do to be in the company of anyone he considered a friend of his.
For several years one of my sons and his friend Steve and I had an annual outing here at Fiddlers Creek. The first year, I invited Phil to join us to complete a foursome. Each following year my son always mentioned "make sure you ask Phil Messina to play with us at least one of the days. These kids were in their twenty's but so enjoyed Phil, his natural charm and his ease around everyone.
I have such fond memories of this finest of men. I'll always tip my cap as I pass his home on the third hole.

My deepest condolences to the Messina family on Phil's passing. I received the sad news today from the Abp. Molloy newsletter. Although I first met Phil in the 1970s, I never knew we went to the same high school. While I was in the New York office of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co., I was assigned to the audit of Columbia Savings and Loan. That is where I met Phil for the first time. I remember his smile, his bright demeanor and and his charming personality. He was one of the best clients I ever had.

I began working for Columbia Federal Savings Bank as a part-time teller back in the early '80's while Philip Messina was a senior executive. He was one of the kindest and fairest men I have ever met. Although I moved on to another financial services company a few years later I will always remember Mr. Messina. He was a great leader and I have thought of him fondly many times over the years. My deepest condolences to his family.

I was very saddened this morning when notified about the passing of Phil. He was a dear friend and close business associate who was always available to help a fellow banker going way back to his days at Columbia Savings and Loan in Woodhaven and mine in Richmond Hill.
Please accept my condolences and all my sympathy is with the family.
May God grant him eternal peace.
Regards,
Anthony

I just read about Phil's passing. My heart is breaking as I guess we always think there will be enough time to reconnect. It was a privilege and honor to have worked with and known Phil. A true "Gentle"man in every sense of the word. I will and have always looked back at our time working together with great affection for Phil. It is a rare pleasure in life to be acquainted with someone so kind, genuine, warm, giving, smart, fair and loving. Phil you have a special place in our hearts and we will never forget you. Thank you for the privilege of your friendship. Our hearts and prayers are with Phil's wife, Phyllis, his children and all his family and friends who are shocked and pained by his passing. xo

Dear Phyllis and family,
I am so sad to hear of the death of Philip. As you know he was a good friend of my older brother,Ed . He lived right down the block from us in Richmond Hill, where we all grew up. I remember fondly his cheery smile and his kindness to me, even though I was the kid sister. He was always one of my favorites and from the other condolences, I see he maintained his kindness and optimistic attitude throughout his life. I truly cannot believe he has left . My condolences to you and his children and grandchildren. May he Rest In Peace .
Love,
Patricia

I consider myself so very lucky to have known Mr. Messina - I just couldn’t call him Phil only out of respect - for so many years and I am going to miss him. What a truly better world because of him and what an inspiration he was to me and so many others. I think of him as a hero - a hero to his family and to me and likely so many others. I can’t think of anyone else that I have wanted to emulate more than Phil - Mr. Messina. I’m sad that he is gone but comforted in the fact that he will never be gone because we will always see him in Marybeth, Steven, Chris and his grandchildren...and that actually makes me smile.

I've know Phil most of my life as Mr. Messina. It's only in the last couple of years I became comfortable calling him Phil; but really, it could have been Dad. I've had the distinct pleasure of knowing Phil since I was 12 years old - when Marybeth and I became lasting friends in 7th grade. So many memories for all those years - but the one constant - every single time I would see him - was his warm and gentle greeting, "Hi Di!" followed by an enormous hug and infectious smile. He touched so many lives with his generous and kind spirit; life on this planet will change because he did make it a brighter place when you were surrounded by his love, and now, it will become so much brighter in the place where he has gone.

To a truly special man. I cannot begin to describe how positive an impact you have had on me. While I’ve only had the privilege to be your friend for a relatively short time, I will strive in my everyday llife to be more positive, kind and loving, just like you. Golf will not be the same without your welcoming smile. Rest in peace Phil.

We are both so saddened to hear the news of Phil's passing. We have been blessed to know this wonderful man who was so friendly and caring to us. His warm smile every time we would see each other here in Fiddlers Creek was infectious. We all admired him and and just how much he loved his wife Phylis. He had so much joy in his heart and we were honored to have known him. Phill will be missed by everyone in Majorca village.
