The Hughes family lived through the Depression and WWII. The children worked odd jobs, including, for John, a Job as a funeral director's assistant, where he did house calls to assist in transporting the deceased from place of death (often the home of the deceased) to the funeral home. John served a term in the US Army Reserve as a clerk in the early to mid-1950s. Upon leaving the Army, John worked for a period of time as a materials manager at Fairchild republic Aviation in Farmingdale, NY, then as a water plant operator for the City of Yonkers. In the mid-1950s, fathered 4 children by previous marriage: Geraldine "Geri" Gregerson, John P Jr. (died 1990 in an auto accident), Laura and Linda.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady, Star of the Sea RC Church, N Myrtle beach, SC Since Mr. Hughes was unable to care for himself at this time, he was moved back to Greenlawn, living with Janice and John Strohsnitter until his death, also from complications of pneumonia on 08/28/2018. Though John was too infirm to attend Church, he watched Mass on TV.

John died on 08/28/2018 at St. Catherine's Hospital after a 2 month long battle with pneumonia, congestive heart failure and kidney failure, and after receiving the Sacraments and Last Rights of the Roman Catholic Church.
