Obituary of John Pious Hughes

John P. Hughes was born December 19, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY, the son of William Hughes, a Radio Engineer and Mary (nee Appel), a Homemaker. John was one of 4 siblings William "Bill" (d 2017), Virginia and Joseph "Joe". John's mother died shortly after the birth of his brother Joseph. The family was raised Catholic and remain so. The Hughes family lived through the Depression and WWII. The children worked odd jobs, including, for John, a Job as a funeral director's assistant, where he did house calls to assist in transporting the deceased from place of death (often the home of the deceased) to the funeral home. John served a term in the US Army Reserve as a clerk in the early to mid-1950s. Upon leaving the Army, John worked for a period of time as a materials manager at Fairchild republic Aviation in Farmingdale, NY, then as a water plant operator for the City of Yonkers. In the mid-1950s, fathered 4 children by previous marriage: Geraldine "Geri" Gregerson, John P Jr. (died 1990 in an auto accident), Laura and Linda. John Hughes and Mary Light were married in 1980. Mary and John Hughes remained active parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi RC Church, Greenlawn. In 1994, John and Mary Hughes retired and moved to Calabash, NC where they were active in activities such as dancing, arts and crafts, fishing and other activities with many friends at the clubhouse of their Saltaire Village Retirement Community. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes were active parishioners of Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, N. Myrtle Beach, SC. Unfortunately, Mr. Hughes was diagnosed with Dementia (Alzheimer's Disorder) in the late 2000s. On 07/29/2014, Mrs. Mary Rose Light Hughes passed away from complications of pneumonia. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady, Star of the Sea RC Church, N Myrtle beach, SC Since Mr. Hughes was unable to care for himself at this time, he was moved back to Greenlawn, living with Janice and John Strohsnitter until his death, also from complications of pneumonia on 08/28/2018. Though John was too infirm to attend Church, he watched Mass on TV. John died on 08/28/2018 at St. Catherine's Hospital after a 2 month long battle with pneumonia, congestive heart failure and kidney failure, and after receiving the Sacraments and Last Rights of the Roman Catholic Church. He is survived by his children, Geri (Ron) Gregerson, Laura and Linda; stepchildren James (Sheila) Light, Janice (John) Strohsnitter, Jeanne (David Light – Buff) and several grandchildren and step – grandchildren, and a great grandchild. John is also survived by sister Virginia, and brother Joseph (Lucille). John was predeceased by brother William. John's cremains will be buried alongside Mary at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington, NY.
