Dear Mrs. Jabbar,
I am a former student of Dr Jabbar. I was one of his gymnasts from SICC back in the mid 1970's. I had thought of Jabbar often as I raised my own family of athletes as he would tell me they must have a sport.
I would have loved to tell him all three became all Americans and we had 2 wrestlers and a swimmer. He was my own hero and my dear friend. I learned so much from him on how to be a better person and a tolerant person when times were not so nice to him. I have wonderful memories of you both at my wedding. I will cherish my memories of him. Know he was a wonderful friend and educator. With him in my mind I am now pursuing a Doctorate in Nursing Practice. He always said anything is possible. God Bless you and your family.

Uncle Najim was a legend amongst his siblings and family in Iraq. He was so well known in Baghdad for his amazing athletic abilities and wonderful personality. During family gatherings in Iraq, uncle najim’s name always came up and many stories were shared about his great physique and physical agility and oh that smile..that beautiful smile.
I was fortunate enough to visit with uncle Najim and his family a couple times. All the stories I heard about him in Iraq were true. Beyond that, he was so fun to be around. He taught me how to swim. We caught fire flies together. I watched him care for his hydrangeas. He sang old school Iraqi songs. He belly danced for us. That’s my memories of him.
I will miss that beautiful radiant smile and listening to him sing his old school Iraqi song by Nathem Algazaly. The song was about sitting on top of a date tree and reminiscing on life. I hope you are sitting on top of that tree uncle najim and smiling that beautiful smile of yours. Love you!

I am deeply saddened by the death of my long time friend Najim. He was a man of great accomplishments but most of all he was a kind and compassionate person who had a wonderful heart. He visited with me in my office several times a year over many years and I always enjoyed our conversations and sharing of stories. He was both a mentor and friend to me. I will miss him terribly and send my condolences to your family in this time of grief. Blessings to you all. With gratitude that he was in my life, Sharon L. Shields, Ph.D. Associate Dean at Peabody College

My grandfather was a man of amazing strengths and feats, whether it be running around the block 20 times, swimming 40 laps or doing handstands to celebrate the arrival of his children into this world, he showed everyone the importance of determination and a was a fantastic example of how to lead a successful life. I was fortunate and unfortunate to know him as my grandpa yet not see him do what he loved and was able to do for many years. That will never change the fact that he was an inspiring grandparent I will never forget. His passion for teaching was continuous, even if some students weren't ready for his lessons. I wish I could take back the night he wanted to show me some of his gymnastics poses and that hurt me and I cried pretty hard but that was one of his best moments and a teacher and grandfather and proved how his patience never changed even in his later years. I admired Grandpa for finding tranquility in agreeably mundane, everyday things. Every moment spent with me and him sitting outside on a sunny day or watching TV was truly a keeper.
Thanks to you, Grandpa, I'm well on my way to having an admirable life and a more than winning personality to follow suit.
Good night, Grandpa. Your great-grandchildren say hi already.

Whenever Uncle Najim entered the room, he would open his arms wide and declare "Unkell!". (thats me trying to mimic his accent...not a typo) At any given time there could be 10 to 15 cousins hanging around and he called all of us uncle! We were so amused by this silliness that we began calling them, Aunt Najim and Uncle Connie. It never grew old...at least not to us. There was nary a moment when Uncle was not walking on His hands or doing a handstand on a swing set or a dock or a water well. His acrobatic feats were always coupled with the uncle call of adulation "luh, luh, luh, luh, luhluh!" Next, he would patiently watch as we demonstrated our gymnastic skills or lack thereof. Then he would line us up and spot us as we did somersaults, round offs, handsprings, back bends and of course the hand walking. Leila and I were always in a mob of boys, but Uncle never treated us like we were weaker than the rest of them. He always told me I could do it even though we all knew I couldn't! Uncle was not much of a conversationalist but he showed us his love by spending time with us and teaching us to do the things that he knew how to do well. He was always very proud of us when we got it right and always very patient when we got it wrong, which was most of the time! I can hardly separate most of my summer childhood memories from being with Uncle. I know he wasn't there as much as I remember but he always left such a big impression on me. I remember when my brother died, Uncle Najim and AuntConnie took me and Karim in for a little while. Uncle took me to Staten Island University and let me play on the equipment while he was training his students. I think I jumped the highest I've ever jumped on that trampoline that day. I still remember the view from way up there. Being one of eight in my own family I didn't have a lot of alone time with anyone . I really appreciate Uncle letting me have that alone time with just Him and making me feel so special! Thanks for a lot of great memories and views Uncle!I will miss you!
