Obituary of Miriam W. Elliott

Miriam Wagner Elliott

           1917 – 2019

Miriam Elliott died on January 2, 2019 succumbing to congestive heart failure. She was 101.  She lived life long and well.

Miriam was born in Garden City Park, Long Island on September 24th, 1917.  She attended City College and went to work at Socony Mobil in Manhattan.  She met Jack Elliott and they married in June 1940. When he returned from the war, together, they built a home in Cold Spring Hills.

After raising three children, Miriam went back to work as Executive Assistant to the Principal at Memorial Junior High School from 1964 – 1981.  Jack died in 1990. Miriam and her daughter, Dawn moved to Kings Park in 1999.

She loved life and gave her time and talents to many organizations and charities.  She was a Renaissance woman who had a gritty determination, big heart, a sparkle in her eyes and an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. She accepted others and the world as they were and never forgot to look for the silver lining. Her sense of adventure was unparalleled.  She was a passionate bridge player; and she loved the freedom of driving a car. She bought her first car in 1936; and at 100 she purchased her last car which she drove (not like a little old lady) until late 2018.

She is survived by daughters Meredith Fichtel and Dawn Elliott; her son, Gary Elliott and daughter-in-law, Lisa Poe Elliott.  She has four grandchildren:  Ryan Viets, Whitney Viets, Cooper Elliott, and Taylor Elliott.  And three great-grandchildren: Devin Viets, Amanda and Rachel Fichtel.

A memorial service will be held at Smithtown United Methodist Church on Sunday, January 13th at 3pm to celebrate her life.  In lieu of flowers, donations to The Special Olympics and Island Harvest Food Bank would be appreciated.
