We only heard of Chef Mike Maroni’s passing today, we are heartbroken for you all. We moved out of our hometown (Northport/Babylon) on Long Island 7 years ago for work in the MidWest. But every year, on my husband’s birthday(which is today), he asks me to make Maroni’s meatball recipe as his birthday meal- bc of course they’re amazing. We first loved Chef Mike when he became hugely popular on Throwdown with Bobby Flay, and we had to see what Maroni’s was all about. That was over a decade ago. We go back to LI to visit family every year and in December 2019 we tried to eat at Maroni’s, but it wasn’t open that day. We are so sad for the Maroni family to have lost such a gem of a man. Please know that his recipes live on in foodies like us who appreciate all that he created! Today, my husband will enjoy Mike’s grandmother’s meatball recipe (stuffed in melted fresh mozzarella over crusty garlic bread), and we will salute to Chef Mike.<3 Our condolences and love are sent to Maria and the rest of the family. May God bless you as you re-open Maroni’s June 1st- I’m sure Chef Mike will be smiling down from heaven.

When kids love you, you know you’ve done right. For my grandchildren from LA, Lexi and Bradley, a dinner at Maroni was a first priority for the trip to NY. Why? Not just because of the food, which for me has been the best meal in the metro area. But because of the warm “welcome back, family” greeting from Maria and staff, and then the visit from the busy kitchen by the man himself with that always present smile...generous with everything Mike and Maria could give. So Mike, you are loved and missed all the way out here in LA, and I’m sure in many places in between. And never will be forgotten. The entire Hamburger family who knew you all...Jordan, Michele, Bradley, Lexi, Brian, Erin, Micole, Jon, all the kids, cousins who gathered for all the important family events..and just dinners...send their love. For Fran and me, when it was Wednesday, it was Maroni’s. I’m here for you..with love...Max

My favorite memory, of many, was cooking with Mike in the kitchen of the restaurant. It was a birthday gift arranged by my daughters and it was there that I came to see his genius at work. How he came up with some of the new dishes that would be enjoyed by the patrons that day was magical. He was a whirlwind of invention and one of the most creative persons that I have ever met. Now God can see a gifted chef up close. Rest in peace, our friend.

Michael had a smile and warmth about him that instantly drew people to him. He lit up the room with his wit and down to earth sense of humor. Anyone who crossed paths with him even for a fleeting moment liked him. He was truly one of the good guys all around. Many including.myself.are heartbroken and he will truly be missed

Maria, Angie, Fred and the entire Maroni family,
We are here in South America wishing we could be there to support you in this very difficult time.
Knowing Mike for these past 18 years has been a joy.
When the restaurant first opened , I used to push Alec in the stroller and sit by the front windows to have the best little pizzas. Of course as the years went by, with all my comings and goings (for all those pots of meatballs) I got to know Mike and we often would talk business. One day he discovered the Australian lamb we sold where I worked, he loved it so much that eventually I would see him just about every week bringing it to him along with other stuff he used or experimented with. He was always happy to see me "MIKEY!!!!" he would bellow from his station in the kitchen "what you got?"
It was always a pleasure to see him and the family at work, share some of life's adventures and our combined wisdom.
Ana and my travels to Colombia were always of interest to him and when he caught a show about street food in Medellin he told me about it and his interest to come here and have "steak under the bridge". Being Mike, the next time we came in to eat he made a special dish for Ana and I, delivered it to the table himself proclaiming it to be "steak under the bridge"
Two years ago he told me about his plans to take life in a different direction, less time at the restaurant, more time with his parents while planning his life with Maria out east, as we know he did just that. He loved his work but his family always came first.
Thank you to Mike for living life on his terms and bringing such good things to so many. He was a great friend.
In Medellin where Avenida Guayabal crosses over Calle Diez in barrio Campo Amor, every evening there is a massive grilling taking place and that is where we will be Tuesday evening. Having the "steak under the bridge" in memory of MM
Much love to you all
Michael, Ana, Alec and Collin Bartoldus (aka "Bart-a-rolis")

Micheal was one of the most welcoming, caring, giving, loving human beings to have walked this earth.
He was deeply devoted in all that he did and to all who he loved.
His smile, his laugh and the light in his eyes will be on view in my heart always.
Michael was a personality of exceptional force, a truly great man that with much sadness will be greatly missed....
I am blessed to call him cousin,
Love you Michael
