Good Day, Brendan and I entered the Holy Cross Brothers in the same year at Valatie, N.Y., then the Novitiate, St. Joseph's in Rolling Prairie, Indiana. One specific incident remained with me all these years: we were assigned to wash the pots & pans after the Supper meal. This took longer to accomplish than the other chores by other Brothers. Brendan got angry about the two of us having to remain and miss a substanial part of our recreation period. So he "stormed" up to the Novice Master;s offfice (Bro; Gerontius) and complained we were left to do all the work with no help. The next day it was announced that until all the kitchen chores were finished no one would be at recreation. We had much help from that day on!
When we were at St. Edwards' University, Austin Texas, he had a serious accident at the swimming pool. Unfortunately he dived off the end of the pool and struck his head which gave him a concussion and serious after effects. The situation was a bit compounded in that we, plus a few other Brothers were not suppose to be at the pool. Nonetheless under the circumstances there was no reprimand.
I was with him again at Rhinebeck, NY, at a "school" for court remanded teens. He was clearing the woods in front of the house so we could see the river traffic. He was principal and had me update all the records giving the students the proper credit for graduation by NY State.
Really liked Brendan alot. and was just thinking of him the last few days. I think it was a nudge from him.
Blessing,
John (Jack) Donahue
