Obituary of James E. O'Neill

O'Neill – James E., of Northport, NY, passed away peacefully February 19, 2020 after recently celebrating his 98th birthday.

 

Beloved husband of the late Ursula O'Neill. Loving father of Michael O'Neill, Margaret (Phil) Laughlin, James (Kate) O'Neill, Mary O'Neill, William (Laura) O'Neill & Eileen (Bill) Wood. Beloved grandfather of thirteen and proud great-grandfather of fifteen.

 

James was born in Pittsburgh, PA and served in WW II as a naval officer in the Pacific. He was educated at Carnegie Mellon University and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His specialty was aeronautical engineering. Some of his employment history consisted of working with nuclear reactors and jet propulsion in the late 50's, NASA's early space program in the 60's and Grumman until his retirement in the 80's. Upon retirement, he volunteered his time to tutoring many Northport students in math, physics and chemistry.

 

Always kind, humble, and intelligent, James lived a full and exemplary life. He inspired those around him with his dedication to family, friendship, church, community and lifelong learning.

 

Reposing Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport, NY on Thursday, March 5, 4-9 PM. Mass of Christian burial at 10:15 AM on Friday, March 6 at St. Philip Neri Church in Northport, NY. Interment to follow with U.S. Navy Military Honors at Calverton National Cemetery.
