I go back with Gus to 1980s in the National Guard. I remember when he became the SGM at MMC. He had the unit organized so well that even though I was the CSM of the senior Hq, he knew that I was on site even before I made it to the front door. Because of Gus and his "people" the MMC was the best run unit in the entire DISCOM. When the DISCOM commander, who had a long unnecessary dispute with Gus, transferred him to our HQ, he followed the order and was a excellent Operations SGM. It was during this time that he was in the HQ that we became very close. (we had our own private tent at AT) After we both retire we continued our time together in the SGM Association. Of course our relationship was strengthened because we were just two old time cops who made the best of department military leave.
