Obituary of Patricia Hope Liebler

Patricia Hope Liebler (née McCaffery), age 84, passed away on June 17, 2020 in her home in Calverton, NY, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family. Pat was born on September 21st, 1935 to the late Lt. Col. Hugh F. and Lucy K. McCaffery in Newport News, Virginia. In 1945 she christened the U.S.S. McCaffery to honor her father and uncle who were both World War II heroes. She was raised in Manhattan, NY, where she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart High School and Marymount College. She was president of her class at both institutions. Pat grew up playing tennis in the Westhampton Country Club, was the captain of her high school basketball team, and was known amongst her friends for her love of dancing. In 1960, she married the late Joseph A. Liebler, who served as a first lieutenant of the U.S. Airforce, at St. Thomas More Church in New York City. Together, they lived in Centerport, NY until their relocation to Calverton. Above all, Pat's greatest loves were her faith and her family. She was a dedicated CCD teacher for over 30 years, a volunteer at both Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church and St. Isidore R.C. Church, and a passionate advocate for "Rite to Life". Pat was a respected and revered member of her church and community and was entrusted with responsibilities such as organizing bus trips to Washington D.C. for "Rite to Life," as well as assisting new members of the Christian faith in receiving their sacraments with The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). Pat selflessly devoted many hours to volunteering in her parish and took pride in cultivating love and faith within her family. Loving mother of Lucy Gruner (Bruce), Thomas (Carrie), William (Dianne), James, and the late Joseph A. Jr. Cherished Nana to Cory, Greta, Jesse, Alissa, Kaleigh, Joey, Denny, Liam, and Henry, and great grandmother to Luke. Dear sister to Hugh (Carole) and Joseph McCaffery (Barbara). She is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as friends who she adored. Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, June 23rd, 10am at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Centerport NY. Burial to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
