We met John in the backyard of Belmont Park in the early 1980's. It was immediately obvious that he was a man of great wit and truly was going to become a wonderful friend. He never stopped delighting in applying nicknames to just about everything: his children, his friends, and I guess most of all personalities at the track, More often than not, we laughed and laughed as he explained the derivation of these names. That's why I was so happy when he took to the nickname I bestowed on him ---- Tidlig, the Norwegian word for Early. Of course, we Americanized the pronunciation so it became Tid - lig. Soon John was a part of our family too, spending almost every Saturday evening at our house for dinner and then cards with me, Oddbjorg, and my mom Mildred. He just loved Oddbjorg's pot roast. These Saturday nights grew to include Thanksgiving as well. We also competed weekly in trying to outdo each other solving the Sunday Newsday crossword puzzle (it was a nickel a box). That's why he took such delight each Thanksgiving when I hand-fashioned for him a "Horseword" puzzle, a custom set of clues often including his own funny nicknames. We then rented places together up near Saratoga, and John reveled in telling us all about the history of the 'cradle'. Those days are now gone, but Oddbjorg and I will always remember John Earley as a bright, good man and a caring friend.
