Obituary of Michael K. McDonald

Michael ("Mike") K. McDonald, beloved husband, brother, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully after a battle with cancer on November 5, 2020. Mike was born on April 7, 1943 in Rockville Centre, New York. The son of William McDonald and Katherine (Powers) McDonald, he was one of eight children in the McDonald household. After attending Brooklyn Preparatory High School, Boston College and Hofstra University, Mike dedicated his life to helping others battling addiction and mental illness. He helped so many during the darkest moments of their lives and gave them hope to find a path to recovery, doubtlessly saving many lives in the process. After spending decades counseling those in need, he taught the next generation to do the same as a professor at Hofstra University. Mike was known as a generous man who would give you the shirt off his back. He was famous for "re-gifting" presents received from his family to those in need. Beyond helping others, Mike's passion was his family. The joy he felt from spending time with his seven grandchildren and telling stories at family gatherings was always apparent from the wide, beaming smile on his face. Mike loved making trips to the Dollar Store, hunting the aisles for "treasures" to give to his grandchildren. Mike relished his enduring relationships with his fellow alumni of Brooklyn Prep, Boston College and Hofstra University. One of Mike's favorite escapes was being near the water, and during his later years he enjoyed countless trips to Crab Meadow Beach and Northport Harbor with his wife of 52 years, Eileen. Mike is survived by his wife, Eileen (Burke) McDonald, his daughter Patricia Pagoaga, son-in-law Dennis and grandsons Jack and Max, son Timothy McDonald, daughter-in-law Kate and granddaughters Caroline and Shae, son Kevin McDonald, partner Kim Krause, and grandson Cooper, daughter Colleen Badia, son-in-law Erik, and grandchildren Henry and Charlotte, and his siblings Peter, Tom, Dennis, David and Katy O'Toole. Mike was predeceased by his parents, brother William, and sister Patricia. In lieu of flowers or donations the family requests that you honor Mike's legacy by reaching out to someone who may need your help, or just to let them know you care about them. Mike taught his children that we can all make a difference in this world by lending a helping hand or just an ear to listen.
