Clare and I were both Social Studies Teachers in the Kings Park School District. In fact, for many years, our classrooms were side by side to one another. From this vantage point, I was able to see this masterful teacher at her work. It did not take me long to see that Clare loved teaching, but more importantly, she was dedicated to bringing out the very best in each and every one of her students. At the beginning of the school year, Clare would take scared, insecure and hesitant learners and slowly transform them into secure and capable students. Also, she was ale to challenge the very brightest students to reach levels of achievement that made everyone proud.
Her compassion for her students was legendary. At the end of a school day, it was not uncommon to find Clare with an unhappy or troubled teenager. Room 212, Clare’s classroom, became a safe sanctuary for all those students who needed to be heard. This unique bond with her students did not end when the school year was over. Year after year, a steady stream of former students would appear at her doorway to share old memories and new experiences. The kids affectionately called her, “Mrs. Doobie,” a name they equated with love and compassion. Yes, Clare was truly, “A Teacher For All Students.” And, I am truly going to miss my dear, dear friend.
My deepest sympathy to her loving family.

Clare and I started as young teachers in the old RJO Junior High School, we shared some wonderful times at parties and happy hours with our fellow Kings Park teachers, we shared in the joy of one another’s marriages, we worked alongside each other for a full career as colleagues, and twenty years ago we walked into the district office together to submit our retirement papers. Our lives ran on close parallel paths, and I will focus now on the positive aspects of all we shared, rather than the heartache of losing her.

Clare always had a smile and a story to share on the beach of the Royal Sands & Royal Haciendas in Mexico. She made our vacations much more enjoyable and will be missed.

My good friend Clare, I have known you since we were little girls at the beach. Our Moms were best friends growing up and we became besties as the years passed and we raised our own families in Huntington Beach. We had fun summers away from teaching and enjoyed seeing our kids play at the beach. The boys were all blonde and at times you thought one of my boys was Tommy, out on the float. We became closer friends in retirement and widowhood. We understood each others emotions and supported each other. We enjoyed our kids weddings and shared our joy as we became Grandmas. My children and grandchildren considered you part of our extended family. Thomas called you the dinosaur lady because you spent an afternoon talking about dinos and brought him a model of one. Your latest gifts were the goldfish that turned colors in the bathtub. We loved your stories and your knowledge. You were a neighborhood historian and knew the names so many families. I never heard you say a bad word about anyone. Your cheerful smile and personality will always be remembered. We are all saddened by your passing. Fly with the Angels until we meet again , So Long ,Maureen Stevenson and family

Mrs Dubois was my 9th grade social studies teacher. She was my favorite teacher. Always smiling always patient and made the class enjoyable. I am so sad to hear the news and hope the family finds comfort in knowing what an impact she had on her students.

I met Clare through work and only got to speak on the phone with her. I was surprised she wanted to become Facebook friends. I appreciated all of her sweet comments and thoughts. She would call me at work, even after our work for her was done, to chat and check in on me. Though I didn’t get to know her long or personally I knew that she was a very thoughtful kind person. I know she’ll be missed, especially by those who knew her well.

Aunt Clare (as she was known to many including those unrelated to her) was one of the sweetest most positive people I ever met. She always had a warm smile and a way of speaking about people in the kindest way, as if they were the most wonderful, important person in the world. I really enjoyed hearing stories about her days as a teacher...it was obvious her students adored her and that she had touched many young lives. She will be sorely missed as a neighbor and friend. Sending our sincerest condolences to her children and the rest of the family.

I met Clare when I began working at Camp Alvernia in Centerport, LI. The camp is run by the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn. Her father Ed was also close to the brothers and he and I worked for Grumman Aerospace. Clare and I dated for a time in the mid 1960's. We both shared our Irish culture; she could talk and I would listen. We stayed in touch over the years; Clare was a dear friend. I will miss her and wish her children, her sisters and extended family my sincere condolences. Edwin O'Keefe Westley
