Obituary of Gerd Johansen

Gerd Johansen (née Schaper) 97, passed away peacefully on Tuesday January 12, 2021. Farvel, vi elsker deg - we love you Mor, Bestemor, Oldemor. She was born in Askim, Norway in 1924. She came to this country as a young girl and met her husband Torkil Johansen (d 1982) in Brooklyn during WW II. They lived in Bay Ridge Brooklyn with their 3 children, moving to Massapequa and then to Northport where she lived for over 50 years. Gerd had a zest for life and loved to bake, dance and travel. She was always ready to give of herself to her family with deep devotion and to those causes she believed in. She was a lifetime member of Sons of Norway and served in many capacities over the years. She was active with the Fine Arts Museum of Long Island and the Vanderbilt Museum. Gerd later met longtime companion, Arnfinn Sangvic (d 2010). They shared their love of family, Norway and travel. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren & great grandchildren who all loved her very much. She is survived by her son Ron Johansen & wife Linda of Huntington, daughter Ethel Galea & husband Vincent of Northport and son Harry Johansen & wife Kathy of Northport. Grandchildren - Kristin Liskow & husband Gary, Erik Johansen & wife Allison, Erin Franklin & husband John, Thomas Johansen & wife Jessica, Christina Drew & husband Tim, Vincent Galea, Austin Galea & wife Karin and Melissa Galea. Great grandchildren - Owen, Reid, Livia, Jackson, Anna, Makayla, Logan, Stevie, Timmy, Emma and Grace. She is also survived by sister-in-law Joanne Schaper (brother Robert d 2014) and nephews Erik, Steven and Geoffrey. Funeral Service 11:30 AM on Saturday January 16, 2021 at the Abiding Presence Lutheran Church, Fort Salonga. Interment to follow at the Northport Rural Cemetery.
