My prayers for the beautiful family of Dr. Cottrell. He was a great professor and a mentor. I was grateful for the opportunity to meet him and learn from him. Dr. Cotrell was there for me years after I was no longer his student. I enjoyed our talks, having breakfast with him, and the wonderful classes in college. I will miss you!!!

I had the great pleasure & privilege to know & work with Ken when he was principal & administrator of St. Teresa of Avila School near the Brooklyn Museum. Working with Ken for school masses & functions requiring music was always a pleasure. I was the music director-liturgist-pastoral asst. from 1993 until end of 2008. It was so sad when the school closed. Fr. Pizzo & Ken worked so hard & were such a great team & the kids adored both of these dedicated & kind men. I was so blessed to share time with both Ken & Fr. Pizzo socially & years after they both departed St. Teresa for other endeavors. I was luck to know them as not only colleagues, but wonderful & kind friends. I am so sad to learn of Ken's passing. The world has lost a wonderful human being. Blessings to his memory & to his family. I am sad that we lost touch in the past decade. I often wondered how he was. I'm not sure Fr. Pizzo knows about Ken's passing. I will let him know.

Mr. Cottrell was my principal at St. Teresa of Avila in Brooklyn, NY. He was an excellent principal, responsible for resuming athletics during his first two years as principal, and a true example of a person who had a passion for their work. Additionally, he was my first employer, as he gave summer gigs to myself and a few other students, which we were greatly appreciative of. What I’ll always remember about Mr. Cottrell was, as a kid, I felt he really considered our views and thoughts, which naturally promotes creativity. He was truly interactive and solution-based. He would challenge us to think about our future, something I challenge my two sons with to this day. Although my time with Mr. Cottrell was brief, he left a VERY positive impact on my life. I send my deepest condolences to his family and friends. I know he’s in a better place. You’ll truly be missed principal! Until we meet again!
Sincerely,
David Aberdeen

Dear Cottrell Family:
I was saddened to hear of Ken's passing. John Garcia and I visited him in Waveny Ct. in 2019 and was hoping after the pandemic to visit him again.
Ken was special to me as I knew him for over 40 years and had worked with him at Malcolm-King College and LaGuardia Community College.
May his soul rest in peace!

Ann, Jennifer, Kevin: I was much saddened to hear of your dad's death. What a man he was; he will be sorely missed. He was my community mate and principal when we were both at Ascension Parish in the late 1970s. He was an extraordinary principal and much loved by the school families. But even more so, he became a great friend. On extended school holidays, he and I would drive from 4+ hours from NYC to my family in Syracuse. After a brief conversation with my folks, he would continue another 2-3 hours to Buffalo to see his father. And then a few days later he would reverse the trip and pick me up on the way back to NYC. After we had both moved on from Ascension Parish, he would often phone just to check in and bring me up to date on what you kids were all doing. On those occasions it was always difficult to get a word into the conversation. And he was so dedicated to your mom as she struggled with her health challenges. Now they are joined together again. May they both rest in peace. Live, Jesus, in our hearts.

My sincerest condolences on your loss of a very special man. The year Ken was reassigned from Augustine to St. Mary's, i was sent to Augustine. The reputation he had left behind made the job of his successors all that much easier. He was known as a reputable man intensely interested in his students. On a personal level for me, he provided a model of what I wanted to emulate. When I left Augustine seven years later, he made my transition from the Brothers that much more comfortable knowing I had been replaced by an educator and model whom all respected. May he enjoy the fruits of a life lived in dedicated service to mankind and especially to the poor. May you, his survivors, realize what he meant to others, and thank God for the blessings heaped upon you through his intervention.
