Art and I met at Lehigh University when we joined the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. We were roommates Sophomore year and best friends ever since. Every year we have gotten together for a pre Lehigh-Lafayette football game luncheon in NYC during which the winner of the Moser (aka Moeser) trophy was awarded to the member of the group most deserving. Art (aka Berger) was the winner on many occasions. I stayed at the Schweithelm home several evenings, often in connection with a road race in Northport. He has been in my prayers ever since I learned that he had contracted pancreatic cancer and Covid. May he rest in peace and may his family know how much Art was loved and admired. He will be sorely missed.

Condolences to the entire family. '...teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime.' Art was a shining light on our Seaview Terrace block and block parties for over 30 years since we moved here in 1988. Art's paternal spirit, positive energy, passion for fishing and tagging striped bass and love for the outdoors will 'feed us all' for our lifetimes.
May all of your great memories of 'Uncle Art' be a blessing to all of you, as it will be for our family. He is deeply missed and our hearts are with the entire Schweithelm family.

From Rex Lardner
I have many fond memories of Art. We met in the Army and became the best of friends. When the Cow Harbor 10K race began in the 70's Art and I trained for it. After a few years, the race became more 'professional' than amateur. One professional runner was quoted in the Northport paper before the race saying that 'it needs to get rid of the riff-raff.' (meaning Art and myself). Art then had two t-shirts made up that said 'Mr. Riff' and Mr. Raff.' I wore one and he wore the other.

Art was like the Dad of our block on Seaview, the sweetest man ever!! He adopted whales for my kids when they were little and they kept the photos of the whales up in their rooms! He always had a fishing story to tell and was always ready for a chat when we walked by. We will all miss sweet “ Uncle Art”. I’m sure he is fishing and catching and releasing a big one right now!!
We all love you! Dina, Fred, Lindsay, Carli and Jeremy

Art and I fished and traveled together for more than 20 years. Our adventures took us from Montauk to the Florida Keys, from Boca Grande to Marco Island, and from Louisiana to Charleston ,SC. Every July we would spend a week at the Briney Breezes with our respective families. While the kids were off playing, Art and I could be found enjoying a libation or two and eating some clams and/ or sashimi. I will cherish those times for the rest of my days. Art was without a doubt one of the kindest, most generous and thoughtful individuals one could ever hope to meet. My family and I will miss "Uncle Art" dearly. Rest in peace buddy.- Gonzy

From Rich & Maggie Baron:
The incomparable Uncle Art. Fun-loving and funny with a laugh that mesmerized; mastered the "art" of boyish charm; compassionate and comforting; could not be more devoted to family or loyal to friends; as highly principled as they come; sometimes philosophical in attitude, always generous in spirit; an "invested" listener who could converse with anybody and relate to everybody; proudly and gleefully bound to all things Lehigh; his overboard passion for fishing a microcosm of his zest for life; "The Lobster King" forevermore...We're blessed to have had Art and Kathy grace our lives--their friendship as inspirational as it's been uplifting. We'll never stop loving them both. Rich & Maggie

Art was the Best Brother in Law Ever. He taught my sons how to fish in the sea, to respect the ocean and the creatures in it and their habitat. He was a perfect role model. Art, I am forever grateful for the lessons that you taught them .A kind, caring loving sole. With a twinkle in his eye and a smile was always there when needed. Love you forever.

To my comrade-in-arms, First Lieutenant Arthur Schweithelm, 31st Artillery Brigade, U. S. Army Artillery Air Defense, Oakdale, PA and fellow apartment dweller at Pennsbury Village: We never fished together (a big mistake) but we had a whopping good time together keeping Pittsburgh safe from the nation's enemies who might fly over. I am so glad, that in the last year, we had a chance to laugh about some of the antics of those days. You will remain forever the wonderful Uncle Art that you have been since 1967. RIP, my friend.

Rob and I and the entire team at Briney Breezes are so sad to hear the news of Art's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Briney Breezes has not and will never be the same without Uncle Art's smiling face every July and all the fishing visits in between.

Susanne and I are greatly saddened to hear about Art's passing. Besides the many charters that he arranged on the Blue Fin IV, he was a great help on many commercial trips. Sorrow is also spreading amongst Montauk's fishing community that knew him.

Sending all out love to you all. Mr. Schweit had a way to make you feel special even when it was a simple "Hey coach!" yelled out the car window when he drove by. He was so generous with kind words and joyful spirit; he just made you smile. Love to all his girls.xoxox

To Kathy and her entire wonderful family - I will always remember how your beautiful wife's face lit up when she spoke of you. Our last conversation was witty and thoroughly enjoyable. You were Shannon's fishing mentor as you were for so many - I'm sure he's looking forward to sharing a "Special" spot in heaven with you. The one's you left behind will always keep your memory in their heart and cherish the times shared. God Bless.

The single greatest human being I have ever known. My father far more than my uncle, and a irreplaceable part of this world. An absolutely unique, kind, caring, generous and thoughtful person. The absolute best mankind has to offer. I will think about him every day for the rest of my life.

Many fishing memories with my Dad, Fred Rescott and Art! We would go to crab meadow and fish later at night when I was a little girl. We got to watch Art tag fish, too. Thinking of you, Art and your entire family.

In memory of one of the best men I have ever known.
Art Schweithelm was a great example to all men who knew him. He was a loving husband to his wife of 50+ years, Kathy, and to their three daughters, Amy, Laura, and Megan, and grandchildren. He also loved his large group of good friends from high school, college, the Army, work, and fishing. Fishing was his passion.
Art and I have known each other since high school in Massapequa. We were on the track and cross-country teams. We also enjoyed many “extracurricular” activities on weekends. Even though we have been geographically separated for the past 60+ years, we have gotten together whenever we could and stayed in touch. I am truly honored to be one of Art’s long-time friends.
