Obituary of Jerome W. D'Orio

JEROME "JERRY" D'ORIO Born Girolamo William D'Orio, May 4, 1939, to Antoinette and Joseph. Passed peacefully with family by his side on November 6, 2021, due to COVID. As a youth, Jerry excelled in athletics and music at Huntington High School, lettering in baseball, football, and band where he was dubbed a "cool trumpeter" in the yearbook. Jerry went straight into the workforce for the next 40 years, working at Western Union, Huntington Post Office, and Nassau County Sheriff's Dept. During this time, he managed to save for college educations, weddings, family vacations every summer and winter, and resumed his athletic prowess by claiming a softball league batting title in 1971. After midnight shifts and OT, Dad still found time to pitch in the neighborhood softball games on Southaven Dr., be the Auto-QB for the side-lawn football games, and coach 3rd base in Tri-Village (he always waved them home!!). The man loved a shed, with three on the property at one point; and had an odd obsession with raking leaves, taking pride in having the most bags stacked at the curb. In his retirement years, Jerry loved to play golf, bowl, fish, ride his tractor, lounge by the pool, snack between meals, drink an occasional scotch and water, and groom his signature mustache. Jerry is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife Carole of 62 years, his three children Joanne (Donal), Stephen (Louise), Scott (Jenny), his six grandchildren (Jennifer, Catherine, Alexandra, Carson, Gabrielle, Daniel), his sister Ann Marie (Michael) Laino and his niece and nephew, Stacey and Michael. There was never a dull moment when Jerry was around, he was as tough as nails for 82 years and will be dearly missed. Visiting Wednesday 2-5 & 7-9 PM, at Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport. All other services will be private.
