Today Jan. 23rd 2023 and I just learned of Fitz's passing. I wish I had been notified. I met Fitz at a shopping center in N.J. July 1980, so that he could interview me for the position of N.J. State Manager for Widmer Wine Cellars, Naples, N.Y. After a few more interviews and being flown to Rochester, I got the position. A couple of years later when he left Widmer I moved into his position. We became fast friends and remained so until his passing. I had only spoken to him early last summer.
George was a character, with a great sense of humor and a real pleasure to be with and work for.
As the snow flies here in Maine, It reminds me of the day he and I were working together in N.J. had a great morning in sales and then decided to have lunch at Steak & Ale and while the snow piled up outside we sat having snifters of Remy Martin.
He was a great friend and an icon in the wine and spirits industry. He will be missed by many.
RIP my bearded friend, you were an inspiration and a contributor to my success in the industry.
Hers to you, until we meet again.

George was one of the good guys! I first meet him in 1971. He was interviewing me for my first sales job in the wine industry. The company was United Vintners, I meet him at 30 Vesey Street. I got there around 9:45 AM. They sat me in the conference room at the end of the long hall. From my seat I can see down the hall where all the offices were. Around 10 I see a guy coming out of his office carrying what looked like a goldfish bowl with red wine in. He swirling away as he heads toward me. We spend 15 or 20 minutes and he asked “How do you think you will like working here” I take a look at the Goldfish bowl and say I’m going to love it. I became salesman 09. For years George would call me 09. For over 50 years I worked for George. I was a direct competitor to George. I sold wine to George at Star. George worked for me as a broker at Mission Hill Winery. It was a great run! All he had to do was walk into a room (mostly restaurants) and you knew it was going to be fun. He didn’t just light up a room…He was like a bolt of lightning entering the room. Miss you old friend, see you in the great vineyard in the sky.
