Obituary of John L. (Jay) Walsh

Walsh, John L (Jay), born on January 27, 1934 (78) of Greenlawn, NY passed away on July 31, 2012 at home with his family. Jay was predeceased by his first wife, Peggy Gates Walsh, and is survived by his wife and best friend Pat (Meade) Walsh and his children, Ellen Rieger (John) of Greenlawn, NY. John L. Walsh III (Christine) of E. Northport, NY, Katie Bigelow (Blair) of Lincoln, MA, Cathy Bosco of Jacksonville, FL, and Bruce Meade of Lakeland, FL. He is also survived by his brothers, Dick and Peter and his ten beloved grandchildren. Jay was born and raised in Northport, NY. His father named a street for him (Jay Court) in the 1930's. Jay retired after practicing law in his hometown of Northport for 30 years. He was president of the Huntington Lawyers Club, Northport Rotary Club and Visiting Nurse and Hospice of Suffolk. He was on the board of the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown and more recently was active in raising guide dogs with his wife, in his home. He patiently willed Hospice House of E. Northport into creation, which is one of his crowning legacies. He has been an active and sober member of AA for over 40 years. Jay was the consummate volunteer always willing to give of himself to those in need. At the age of 70 he became an EMT for the Greenlawn Fire Department because he felt that the siren should never have to sound twice. He also delivered Meals on Wheels and served as a minister of consolation at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs. Reposing Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport, NY, Thursday and Friday 2-4:30 & 7-9pm. Funeral Mass Saturday 10am Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Centerport. Interment Northport Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown, 371 E. Jericho Tpke, Smithtown, NY 11787 and VNS Hospice "Hospice House", 505 Main St. Northport, NY 11768, in Jay's memory would be appreciated.
