Obituary of Alma Maria Silvia Schierhorst

Alma Maria Silvia Schierhorst, on March 4, 2023, at age 78. Loving wife to George H. Schierhorst. devoted mother to Robert (Debbi) Mayer and George (Megan) Schierhorst, cherished grandmother to Trent, Spencer, and Chloe Mayer.

Alma was born in Borgo Val Di Taro, Italy as the youngest of eight children (all of whom predeceased her). She moved to the U.S. when she was 16 years old and grew up in Northport, Long Island where she raised her son, Robert – the absolute joy of her life, and also lovingly cared for her mother.

She held a variety of jobs throughout her life, but the 25 years that she spent as a nurse’s aide at St. Catherine’s Hospital was the most rewarding. Her compassion for her patients in the oncology unit inspired everyone around her. She was happily married to George for 30 years and loved his son, George Jr., like he was her own. George and Alma loved to spend time together, caring for their home and garden, and traveling to Atlantic City occasionally.

After retiring from St. Catherine’s Hospital, Alma cherished her time with her grandchildren who affectionately called her “Nonna”. She loved spoiling them and enjoyed watching Trent play baseball, Spencer march in the band, and Chloe play all of her sports. She loved to cook, host family parties and barbecues, play Italian cards, and win a mean game of bocce. She lived a simple life - it didn't take much to make her happy - a phone call, a card, a visit, a story about nothing. She loved her family more than anything else in the world. Her tremendous faith in God was an essential part of her life. Alma fought her battle with cancer with grace and will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Memorial visitation will be held at Nolan Funeral Home.Thursday, March 9 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Prayer service at 8 p.m. Donations can be made in Alma's memory to Visiting Nurse Services or Hospice House of Suffolk, 101 Laurel Road, East Northport, NY 11731.
