Obituary of Joseph Cancroft

Joseph Owen Cancroft, a cherished presence in the lives of many, passed away on January 8, 2024, at the age of 60. He is survived by his loving wife, Karen (née Hassan), his devoted children, Owen (Amy), Ryan, his loving mother, Dr. Virginia S. Cancroft, and his adoring siblings: Dr. John E. Cancroft (Winnie), Jim (Colleen) Cancroft, William (Marilyn) Cancroft, Patrick Cancroft, Kevin Cancroft, and Eileen (Kerry) Sullivan. He is also remembered fondly by his uncle and aunt, Robert and Mary Doyle, and numerous nieces and nephews. Joseph leaves behind a legacy of warmth, generosity, and a profound dedication to his family and friends. 

Born on February 17, 1963, Joseph was the son of Virginia (née Shea) and the late James E. Cancroft of Northport, New York. Growing up in the close-knit community of Eaton's Neck, he shared his childhood with six siblings. Joseph graduated from Northport High School in the class of 1981 and pursued higher education at Marquette University, graduating in the class of 1985, where he immersed himself in college life and made lifelong friends.  Joseph furthered his academic pursuits by earning a master's degree at Long Island University. His passion for teaching led him to dedicate 36 years to the field of special education, 30 of those at Long Island City High School. In the later years of his career, he assumed the role of the Dean of Discipline as well as ladies’ tennis coach, where his impact on students' lives extended far beyond the classroom. 

Known for his big heart, outgoing nature, and generous spirit, Joseph was a beloved figure in his communities. His love for people extended beyond Long Island City High School, Northport and Eaton's Neck, and his Alma Mater, Marquette, to literally everyone he met in his travels. Joseph’s calm, inclusive and fun personality made him loved by all he met. He found joy in his beach community, cultivated lasting friendships over the years, and, above all, cherished the moments spent with his loving family. Watching the sunset was one of those activities, symbolizing the transient beauty of life, yet the enduring nature of cherished memories. "The sunset fades away, but the
memories last forever." Joseph was a dedicated and loving husband, father, son and sibling, and his family and friends will hold onto these memories dearly, remembering Joseph for the profound mark he left on their lives. May his soul rest in eternal peace..
