My daughter and I would walk by and admire her beautiful garden in front of her home. One day a couple of years ago she was outside, tending to her flowers and we took the opportunity to share with her how much we admired her garden. She told us to hold on, went inside, and came back out with clippers. She cut two beautiful red roses and with her radiant smile, gave one to each of us. Each day we looked at those roses in their vase on our counter, we were reminded of that sweet gesture and it made us smile.
When my daughter painted a thank you card and we dropped it off to her, she told us we must come back in the summer and swim with her in her pool. Her generosity and warmth were so immediately evident and so welcome during a time when we were coming out of the isolation of a pandemic and reconnecting with the the world again. Everyday I walk by I smile and can’t help but feel grateful. If she had the ability to make my daughter and me (two strangers) feel this way, I cannot imagine the impact she has had on her family and friends. My heartfelt condolences to all who knew and loved her.

Mrs. Willen
You were a big part of my life growing up on Bayview. What great memories and sometimes my home away from home. You were so kind, generous and appreciative of everything in life! You were a positive role model to me and I can't thank you enough!
My sincerest condolences to Liz, Amy, Joe, Mr. Willen and extended family.
Love,
Dede Casey Good

The Tiger Lilies that return every spring in my garden are those that originated from Millie’s garden! There she was on her hands and knees thinning them out as I went by on my regular run/couldn’t pass up the ones weeded out and add them to my front yard too! I think of her every time they arrive! Millie was a joy and a generous, benevolent neighbor. I miss her!❤️

Millie tricked me into psychotherapy in 1979. In the summer before my senior year at Northport High School she asked if I wanted to make a little money helping her with housework. Everyone knows Mrs. Wilson had that house locked down so I don't know who Millie thought she was fooling, except me, of course. I am on my knees, elbow deep in the master bathroom toilet, Millie sitting on the corner of her bed when she says to me, "So Katy! What are your plans for the future?!" (She never claimed to play fair.) In that singular session, in that most intimate moment, she very deftly planted a seed. She is loved, appreciated, and will always be remembered by the Bayview Avenue Gang. Sincere condolences from the Casey family to Morty, Amy, Liz, Joe, and all the Willen family.

Millie and I first met at the Bethel AME church in Huntington in preparation for our participation in the 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King gave his “I have a dream” speech. We were both deeply involved in registering minority voters, working for open housing and volunteering at the Freedom Center. In 1969, Millie was one of the organizers of a consciousness raising group that met weekly for lunch and discussion. It soon became our primary social group, including husbands, and an unending source of support and celebration for us all. Those of us surviving still meet weekly on Zoom, and even to the last week of her life , Millie was helped to join and lovingly enquirer about each of our lives.
Millie was compassionate and generous to all. She offered her beautiful home for birthday parties, weddings, charitable fund raisers and their pool to all the neighborhood children. She had more friends than anyone I’ve known and served as a connector among us that enriched many lives. Out of a sense of deep gratitude for the beauty and family love surrounding her, Millie responded by sharing all she had. She will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Millie and her family have been a part of my family's lives for as long as I can remember. Millie's smile, warmth and love of life were contagious. I am fortunate to have too many wonderful memories of Millie to begin to list. I would just thank Millie for introducing me to sunrises.
All our love

Intelligence, patience and compassion are what I think of, when I think of "Mrs. Willen". When you met her, it didn't take long to realize she was smarter than you, even for a bratty junior high school kid like me. Joe and his friends were a handful in junior high and high school, but she was always incredibly patient. What also always struck me was the feeling you got when speaking with her that you were the only person in the room and that she was really listening. I have only experienced that with a few people during my life, but she was one of them. She was always welcoming and kind to Nancy and I as we all got older and I will smile whenever I think of her. I'm sorry I can't be there today, but my thoughts and prayers are with you all, Amy, Liz, Joe, Morty and the rest of your family.
