Obituary of Sarah Elizabeth Smith

Sarah Elizabeth Smith, 30, was taken unexpectedly on April 30th, 2024, after a longtime battle with the disease of addiction. Born in Bethpage, New York. She was the beloved daughter of Debra and Billy, and Steve and Annette Smith, and a cherished sister to Michael DeVito and step sister to Dominick and Carmela (Will).

Sarah's journey was one of courage, resilience, and profound impact. After achieving sobriety, she dedicated her life to helping others as a social worker, a calling inspired by her own experiences. Holding a Master's degree in Social Work, Sarah worked tirelessly in her community, providing not just aid but hope, and spoke at numerous events, touching the lives of thousands. Her commitment to helping those struggling with addiction showcased her strength and dedication to change both her life and the lives of others.

A lifelong softball enthusiast, Sarah’s energy and spirit on the field were infectious. Her teammates remember her as not only a fierce competitor but also a supportive friend who brought humor and warmth to every game.

Sarah was known for her wit, compassion, and free-thinking nature. She approached life with an open heart and mind, which made her a beloved figure in her community and an inspiration to all who knew her. Her ability to find humor in difficult situations, and to understand deeply the struggles of others, made her a beacon of light.

Above all, Sarah was a loving daughter, sister, and friend. Her genuine care for others, her unique spirit, and her ability to inspire made her a remarkable person who deserved a long, beautiful life. Her untimely departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who loved her.

A service at Nolan’s Funeral Home will be held Monday, May 6th, from 2pm-5pm, followed by another from 7pm-9pm. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, May 7th, at 11am at Nolan’s followed by a burial at 12:30 pm at St. Charles.

Sarah’s legacy of love, laughter, and resilience will forever resonate with those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered as a light in the lives of many. Donations can be made in Sarah’s memory to ‘Trying Like Hell To Save Them All’
