Obituary of Philip H. Meyer

Philip H. Meyer, of Huntington, NY, died on August 20, 2024 at 83 years of age. He was a well known retired local government official and owner and founder of National College Funding. Phil served as the assistant to the Huntington Town Supervisor from 1975 to 1981 and served with the New York State Assembly and the Suffolk County Legislator as a Legislative Aide to presiding officer Lou Howard. He later served in the same capacity with the Suffolk County Legislature for presiding officer Paul Tonna. Phil retired from the Suffolk County Board of Elections in 2004. In 1985 Phil left government service to found National College Funding in Patchogue. The company assisted over 30,000 families in obtaining much needed college financial aid. During his tenure as president, Phil opened 15 offices in 7 states. The company makes recommendations to increase a families aid eligibility and completes all financial aid forms to obtain both free grants and student loans. Phil was featured on Cablevision's News 12 and in Newsday. Phil rejoined local government in 2000, first with the Suffolk County Legislator as a legislative aide and then with the Suffolk County Board of Elections. Phil, a native Long Islander, born and raised in Garden City, graduated from Garden City High School, Curry College in Milton, MA and attended the New England School of Law in Boston. While in College in Boston, Phil became involved in the Kennedy political campaigns in MA, serving as a coordinator in the Province Street headquarters under Kennedy cousin Joseph Gargan. Phil worked both the 1962 and 1964 campaigns of the United States Senator Edward Kennedy along with other winning campaigns in MA. In 1976 Phil ran for the New York State Senate as a Democrat in a heavily Republican district and lost narrowly going up against a well entrenched incumbent. Phil is survived by his niece Holly Verplanck of Lakeland, FL. Visiting Nolan Funeral Home, Northport, Saturday September 7, 9:30 to 10:00 am with a prayer service at 10am followed by a burial at All Faiths Cemetery, Queens, NY.
