One of my earliest memories of my Uncle Artie is of him repairing his house in St. Albans. The main beam holding the house up was cracked and needed to be replaced. He accomplished this feat and in my young mind I had a vision of him going into the basement, putting the house on his shoulders and like Hercules lifting the house up, replacing the beam and then gently resting the house back down. Years later I asked him exactly how he repaired the beam. He told me he borrowed a hydraulic jack from his work at United Airlines. These jacks were capable of lifting a jumbo jet. That was how he was able to lift the house and replace the beam. I like my younger version better.
The journalist Tom Brokaw wrote a book about my Uncle’s generation, it was aptly titled
“The Greatest Generation “. Just like in the book, he went into the military, was sent overseas, came back and worked hard to build this country, raised a family and gave us a moral compass we should all follow. His picture should be on the cover of Mr. Brokaw’s book.
I will miss you Uncle Artie. Love Pete

We send our love to Cindy, Tom and family. We remember Art in his robust days, warm and funny and happy to help Tom with any Honey (or Daddy) do projects. You’ve taken wonderful care of Art and Clare in their senior years. God bless you. Hugs and love from Virginia.
