Obituary of Robert J. Shaynak
Shaynak - Robert J., son of Peter and Elsie, grew up in Brooklyn, NY. He was in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and enjoyed telling stories about jumping from airplanes and freezing in the Arctic. He studied Architecture at Pratt Institute through the GI Bill and became a member of the AIA in 1963. As an architect in the health care field for over 50 years, he was known for his ability to resolve complicated design issues that would stump most others. He began his career working for large firms designing medical facilities at home and abroad in England, Iraq, Nigeria and Egypt. In 1981 he ventured out on his own. Robert's work can still be seen at Lenox Hill, Memorial Sloan Kettering, St. Vincent's and St. Clare's Hospitals as well as many nursing homes in the New York area. For the past few years Robert worked extensively on the Workman's Circle Multi Care Center in the Bronx. Robert fulfilled the dream of being (in his opinion) the best ball player at NY Mets fantasy camp. He was an avid golfer, reader and chess player who enjoyed history and occasionally strumming the guitar. He is survived by his children Craig, Sean, Ariel, Daisy and his granddaughter Sophia. Widowed in 2009, he is also survived by his wife's parents, sister and nephews. There will be a viewing from 10am to 1pm Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the Nolan & Taylor-Howe Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue, Northport, followed by a brief ceremony grave side at St. Philip Neri Cemetery in East Northport.
