It only seems like just the other day when we were both partaking in Inktober and I was incredibly inspired to rework William O'Connor's 'Arctic Dragon Species' in 3d.
I just heard about his passing and the loss of magic that he had brought to this world.
My condolences go to Mr. O'Connor's family. May your hearts be healed. May William O'Connor's spirit forever live on with his tales of adventure and Dragon chasing with his books and wherever he may be.

I was so surprised to learn today of William's passing.
We first met over 20 years ago at Dragon*Con; we were both displaying our art and I was blown away by how good his paintings were. It was always a treat to see him at Dragon*Con over the years, and at IlluXCon as well over the last 10 years. We had our last chat back in October and I will treasure the memory.

I am a long time fan of William O'Connor's art. It brought me joy for past 15 years. In time he was with us he was such a profilic artist. He painted so many beautiful paintings and many artists won't reach him level of quality or quantity in two lifetimes.
I still can't process the information that he is actually gone. It is so surreal. I feel like a part of me died and can't be replaced. Passing of a person who I didn't know shouldn't have such an effect on me but it does.
I cannot phantom sadness people closest to him feel right now; when his passing had a such a deep impact on people who barely knew him. It just shows that world will be less brighter without him in it.
It is deeply regretful he was taken before his time. He had so much to offer, so many stories to paint and tell; and so much joy to spread to people around him. Especially to people closest to him.
To his family and friends, I hope fond memories of William will help you through this time of hardship.

I ran the Lunacon Art Show for the past 20 years, and Bill was in the show for most of those years. And I could depend on him for a gorgeous display every time. If he had to miss one, it was usually because of some family affair or Samantha's being in some school activity. He was so happy when Madeline was born, and shared pictures and stories with me. It was also great to see him at Illuxcon these past few years. I can't believe he's gone so young.
My deepest sympathy to Andrea, Samantha, Madeline and the rest of his family.

I am in such disbelief at the news of Bill's passing. I feel as though a part of myself has died as well. Bill was one of the most important friends I ever had, and even though our lives went in separate paths over the years, he was never much out of my thoughts. I cannot imagine losing a loving partner so soon. And for Samantha and Madeline, to grow up without their father to share and take joy in their lives together. I can only hope you will take some consolation that you had such a special and loving man in your lives, brief as it may have been. I do not know what else to say. Because of this, he has helped bring great joy and camaraderie to myself and others over the years. My daughter, Alustriel Day is also an up and coming artist and I had pointed out his work as something to study and learn from. As the manager of the Gen Con Art Show, I knew Bill for 20+ years. We all know how kind and humble he was, and what a phenomenal artist he was... and he was also incredibly compassionate. One personal moment that comes to mind - in June 2006, my husband was in a bad accident and sustained serious injuries. Although he was still in bad shape in August, I went to Gen Con as usual to run the show. Bill came up and asked me how my husband was doing, said how sorry he was for what I was going through, etc. I think he was the only artist at the show who said anything to me, acknowledged what I was going through. I have many happy memories of Bill over the years, but that one compassionate moment stands out.

His imaginative and evocative writing style in his instructional series alone made them worth reading and recommending to others. His talent with color, light, and composition brought so much life to a stunningly vast body of work and left me with a great sense of loss at his passing. I met William while I was a Sophomore in Art School. This was at GenCon one of the few times I caught him there. He took the time to talk to me about his process and the digital vs oil just as I was trying to discover those myself as a student. It wasn’t a short conversation either. I talked his ear off. It means so much to me that he took the time to do that. The last 5 years I have been able to work at Illuxcon and seeing and helping William set up his booth was a pleasure and the least I could do to try and pay him back. Sitting and talking with him as he worked on the Beowulf sketch in 2016 was so much fun. The fantasy art world is the lesser for his passing and I hope the family takes some solace knowing he lives on in the lives he touched through both his work and just being awesome.

Bill was a good friend when he went to Alfred - we spent countless hours together, solving the problems of the world and celebrating life together. I've known Bill for nearly twenty-five years. Mainly from the convention circuit. How devastating and tragic. My deepest sympathies to his family. I can't begin to imagine their grief.
One can't think of Bill without seeing him with a smile on his face. One of the most kind and good natured persons one would ever want to meet. I never heard an unkind word about another coming from his lips. Whenever I saw Bill at a show I was always eager to speak to him and get caught up on how things were going for him.
When we first met I was in my early thirties and had a few children of my own and he told me how much he too wanted children and a family. I could tell he was going to be a great dad.
Bill was a wonderful artist whose persona shined through in each and every picture he conjured up. Even when assigned a dark subject his optimism and humanity shined through as you gazed upon the image. I am a better person for having known him. He will be greatly missed.

In further conversation through the years and at the Delaware Art Museum I felt I had met a kindred spirit. Someone who had grown surrounded by the old books of his mother and a fascination with the work of Howard Pyle and love for the work of Tolkien. A bit of a rough start this morning. Sad to hear of the sudden passing of William O'Connor. He was an amazing artist and one of my table neighbors at my first big convention. He was really kind and made me feel welcome. Over the years I would see him at many shows and see his art and just feel happily stunned. You'll be missed man.

When I first met Bill a few years ago, as I am newer to this illustration community, he said he was mostly working digital. I was working very hard on my painting skills. And as we got to talking he was happy that I was still focusing on painting. Later he told me it inspired him to paint more traditionally. I had no idea I might have inspired another artist like this. I'm glad I did and that more paintings were brought into the world to share. I'm sad I didn't get to know Bill as well as so many others. He was a fantastic person on top of being an inspiring artist to us all.

You have been my favorite artist and your works always inspired me to play more.
It was you, in a sense, that instilled me the passion for games which later on motivated me to become the board game designer that I am now.
I owe you my passion for gaming, my admiration for your work and my professional life.
I've never ever met you or communicated with you but I've always admired you and your works of art.
Rest in peace William O'Connor,
you'll be forever missed.
Babis.

I worked on art for Legend of the Five Rings during the years Bill worked on the game. His work established a strong look and style that was admired and loved. He was also amazingly fast and productive. I got to paint a few characters that he designed for other cards and it was always a joy. I never socialized with him much, but I'd see him at Gencons and IlluxCon and other events over the years. It was always fantastic to see his latest paintings and to chat with him briefly. He was always very kind and friendly. And he just kept on creating even more wonderful works as time went on. He had a huge influence on so many- fellow artists and all the gamers, his many fans and his friends. I can't believe he's been taken so soon. What a horrible loss for all those who love his art and primarily for those closest to him.

I met Bill in 1992 at a World Fantasy Convention in Pine Mountain, Georgia. He was 21 years old. He approached me and asked if I would look at his art. I was astounded by Bill's talent. He was an amazing draftsman and painter.
I am an illustrator, but also an agent and Bill asked if he was ready to get professional work. In a very short time, I got him his first job with the Doubleday Book Club to create a dragon with books for a promotional calendar. That piece of art started his career and for many years he continued to sell prints of that dragon.
Bill was a joy, a talent and the nicest guy you could ever meet.
I'm shocked and so sad.
He will be truly missed.
Condolences to his wife, Andrea and his daughters.

To Bill's family,
You do not know me, nor did he in life. But we share some things, as my father Christopher Rush was a professional fantasy Illustrator who I do believe met Bill. He passed away 2 year's ago almost.
I wanted to give my condolensces, knowing that there is nothing anyone can say that can ease the pain of losing someone you love too young. Nothing that can relieve the feelings that I am sure you are all feeling now. I am deeply sorry that you, his family and his daughters know now what this pain feels like. I would not wish it on anyone and I was fortunate at least to be an adult when he passed.
Grieve gently and let yourself feel the feelings, that is my only suggestion for the emotional side of things. It is a rough road and the only way is through.
Having just finished probate and all the icky stuff relating to my own father's passing if theres any advice or insight I can give. My email should be attached. Art rights are a tricky and unique beast and I can honestly say..do not trust the advice of anyone hoping for a financial gain out of this. I was grateful someone in a similar boat to me had reached out and gave me some expectations as to what happens legally. If you need that, I know I do not know your family but I have been through it and am happy to share my experience.
I was always a fan of Bill's work. So I am very sad I will never meet the man myself. Your family and especially his children are in my thoughts.

I am deeply saddened by the surprising news of Bill's passing.
I met Bill at Indy GenCon 2005. We were in the art show together and both working on Dungeons and Dragons. I had a great deal of respect and admiration for his inspirational artwork.
For a brief time, we shared "work in progress" pictures of our latest pieces of artwork for mutual artistic feedback and advice before the finished version. I trusted his judgement. Bill was a talented, wise and friendly man.
He will be greatly missed.
My sincere condolences to his friends & family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear the very sad news of William’s passing. As a fellow illustrator I first met him at IndyGenCon many years back when we were both working on Dungeons & Dragons. From the outset he was open, friendly and great company. His enthusiasm for our craft was infectious and his work inspirational.
Most recently I saw him at Illuxcon last October. As always he welcomed me with his humorous impersonation of my English accent and a big hug. It was great to see him, and his recent work, which yet again had raised the bar another notch.
I want to pass on my condolences to his family. He will be very missed but he lives on in his art, and I am very appreciative to have one of his paintings hanging on my wall.

I'm heartbroken by news of Bill's passing. I only got to see him at illustration conventions, but every time I did he was charming, self effacing, and warm. He also listened with genuine interest and heartfelt empathy. He always had a story to tell, an infectious grin and good natured joviality that left me feeling happy to have run into him. My sincere condolences to those he left behind. His greatest stories always involved his family, and his profound love for them was apparent in every one of them.

It is a grayer world today. Bill's art used color so vividly - I only own one of his pieces, but was transported by many more. He'll be missed by the community and I hope his family will find strength, acceptance, and peace. He burned brightly but left us too soon.

I am stunned. My heart aches for Bill's loved ones. I was on staff in the art department at TSR when Bill was just getting started in illustration. He was one of "the kids" we worked with. He was a good artist then and it was rewarding to watch him grow into a great artist as the years passed. May you find solace in the good memories that you have of him.

I'm so deeply sorry to hear of Bill's passing. As a fellow artist, I would talk with Bill at GenCon and IlluXCon. He was always so friendly and inviting. And like so many others, I was in awe of his talents as an artist. The fantasy art world has lost an amazing talent and visionary. But I know that pales in comparison to the loss felt by his friends and family. My heart goes out to you all.

I am just so stunned and saddened by this news. I quite enjoyed seeing and talking to Bill at both GenCon and IlluxCon. He was very enthusiastic and so positive about whatever we were talking about - which was usually art, of course - but sometimes it was about history or beer or raising kids or just life in general. I loved seeing his work at those shows, too - his art was and is lovingly crafted and beautiful and no doubt influenced my own art in the ways that fantasy art comrades influence and support each other.
I hope you can take some small comfort in knowing how many people he touched with his art and his enthusiasm. Such an all around great guy. He will be greatly missed.
