Obituary of Dorothy M. Holland

Dorothy "Dottie" M Holland, 92, of Northport, passed peacefully on October 3, 2020.  Dottie was born in 1927 on Christmas Day at her home in Brooklyn. A member of the Greatest Generation, Dottie’s childhood years were shaped during the Great Depression and her teenage years during World War II.  She became a secretary for Standard Oil Company (ESSO) at 30 Rockefeller Center after graduating from James Madison High School. In 1948, she was named “Miss ESSO” and enjoyed traveling and representing the company in the USA and Canada. Dottie met the love of her life Walter F Holland while commuting to Manhattan on the trolley car and they married in 1949. While raising her children, in East Northport Dottie began working at Northport High School where she quickly became a beloved member of the Tiger Community. The students, especially those that she advised in the Pep Club, became a tremendous source of pride and joy. She remained in close contact with many of those students over the years. After retirement she devoted herself to her beloved grandchildren and charitable organizations. Dottie enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, writing letters, traveling, and spending time with her family and many friends. Her motto “Always lend a helping hand” and her favorite saying “If you must be blue, be a bright blue” are testaments to a life well lived.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Dottie Holland Memorial Scholarship at Northport High School or St Charles Hospital Auxiliary Northport Chapter.
