Pat Frankemolle
Mrs. Frankemolle was the warm mother of my best friend, Pamela.I loved going to Pam’s house on Rowley Drive, in part because her mom was so cheerful, welcoming, friendly and thoughtful. When I visited, I could tell she was genuinely happy to see me. Things were happening in that house. The family’s pet monkey screeched out a welcome and there was always something cooking in the kitchen. In the living room were rows of jewel toned bottles that glowed emerald, sapphire and ruby when the sun poured through them. In the backyard was a huge tent under the trees we camped out in on summer nights. Life was an adventure on Rowley Drive.
Mrs. Frankemolle was a great cook and enjoyed making meals events to remember. One of them was Welsh Rarebit on toast for lunch, whipped up just for us.
As preteens, she noticed us fooling around with hair and makeup in Pam’s room (listening to Paul Revere and the Raiders.) Mrs. Frankemolle then arranged an exciting evening outing to the Huntington Town House, to a Hair Styling Showcase with the very latest in hair fashions and trends. I’ll never forget getting ready with Pam in our dressiest outfits and climbing that circular staircase (like Scarlett O’Hara) with that huge sparking chandelier overhead, feeling so grown-up. When, later on, Pam moved just down the street from me on Asharoken, we went in and out of each other’s houses freely and without a thought because of our welcoming moms. I was so comfortable with Mrs. Frankemolle.
She was always cheerful with a sunny, positive attitude. A light has gone out in our world, but I know she is lighting things up, on the other side.
