I am so deeply saddened to report the passing of James Godfrey Sr…Mr Godfrey was my Math teacher for 3 years at Island Trees High School, he was also my colleague and Assistant Principal at Walt Whitman High School….Mr Godfrey was more than those titles: he was an excellent, kind and caring classroom teacher who took time to help those with difficulty in Math….He came to Walt Whitman as a guidance counselor and quickly moved into the position of Assistant Principal. There, he continued his stellar leadership skills,unquestionable integrity and character, all the while being open to and respectful of the problems facing young people and support and respect for the teachers and other staff members who worked with him…. Personally to me, Jim Godfrey was my friend, a role model in every way…He and his beautiful and special wife Jeri always opened their home and family to me … they raised 4 wonderful children and never did they stop praising and praying for them and their children and grandchildren….They remained faithful whether it was good or difficult times in their lives…I always sought to learn from them as my own parents aged , moved to Florida and passed….Jim became a second father to me and I will always be grateful for his love , support and wisdom… My husband and I were up from Florida and came to Long Island for a few days last July…We hadn’t seen Jim and Jeri and wanted to take them out to breakfast…They insisted on having us for breakfast …white table cloth and napkins and fine china…They were so cute with each other as their age became more evident to me….So many past dinners and other family celebrations flooded my memories that I felt the need to tell them how special and important they were to me…such gratitude to have had that beautiful breakfast with them…. Jim was a true patriot in every way, proud to live in this country with its greatness and its flaws…. so tomorrow when you are raising a glass with those with whom you share The 4th of July, remember Jim Godfrey and know that this wonderful man is proudly joining with you as angels have lifted Jim , and as he so strongly believed , he is with and seeing the face of God as he so deserved…Rest in loving peace …and God bless Jeri Godfrey and the wonderful Godfrey family….Maureen Tomasulo Mathews (from Facebook post)

My sincere condolences to the entire Godfrey family. I had the pleasure of working with Mr. Godfrey at Walt Whitman HS. He was a class act all around. A firm but fair disciplinarian that commanded respect. He was a mentor and role model for all young teachers. God Bless him. He will be missed.
