Obituary of James J. Godfrey

James J. Godfrey, of Huntington, age 86, passed away July 1st, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Geraldine Godfrey for 62 years. He was the loving father of James J. Godfrey, Jr. (Janet), Daniel A. Godfrey (Christina), Mary Elizabeth Roche (Richard) and Patrick F. Godfrey (Jennifer). He was an amazing grandfather (Grandaddy) to 15 grandchildren, James Godfrey (Julianne), Rebecca Risi (Peter), Emily Anne Godfrey, Jacqueline Marie Godfrey, Megan J. Godfrey, Michael J. Godfrey, Joseph E. Godfrey, Caitlin Godfrey, Jessica Godfrey, Christopher J. Roche, Katherine Roche, Caroline Roche, Patrick F. Godfrey, Jr. (Abigail), Nicholas J. Godfrey and Faith M. Godfrey; great-grandfather to PJ, James, Easton, Luciella, Edward and Chloe. James is pre-deceased by his parents and brothers George and Kenneth. Jim grew up in Flushing, NY, the son of George C. Godfrey and Marie C. Ryan. He graduated from Bayside High School where he met the love of his life, Jeri. He furthered his education at Fordham University, B.S. and St John's, M.S. His first teaching job was at Chaminade HS. He moved to Walt Whitman High School where he started as Guidance Counselor and served as Assistant Principal from 1968 until his retirement in 1992. Jim was a family man who shared his talents and passions with his children and grandchildren to include his love of sports, the Mets, the Giants, golf, sailing, biscuits and cherry pies, his rose garden and the gift of song, particularly during his years of singing with Huntington Men's Chorus. Jim was a Communicant of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church. He and Jeri shared a strong, loving marriage and faith that included attending daily Mass together. They loved volunteering in their parish and shared a devotion to Mary in praying the Rosary regularly. Friends may call Thursday, July 7, from 3:30 - 7:30 PM at Nolan Funeral Home, 5 Laurel Avenue Northport. His funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, July 8 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church, Centerport. Interment to follow at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington.
