I worked alongside Nancy at Centereach H.S. doing the BB clock and scoreboard for home games for many years. I got to see her ``up close and personal `` in the heat of many games. She always exhibited style, grace-under- pressure and always treated her athletes with respect and dignity. Nancy was one of those people who you thought would always be there for you and always was positive and optimistic.
When I found out just recently she had died, I was in total shock. She personified all that is good and rewarding in HS athletics. If you knew Nancy, you could never forget her. We have lost a truly special person and are poorer for it.

I was so sorry to recently learn of Ms. Cole's passing. She was my gym teacher when I was a student at Centereach High School back in the 1970s. She was a wonderful lady and I loved having her as my teacher. I was not an athlete but she was never critical and always very nice. I have the fondest memories of her and am saddened by her passing. She was a terrific lady who did so much for all of the young ladies she either coached or taught in class. She will be missed. My condolences and prayers to her family.

Nancy was a sweet person even though she was also a fierce competitor. Always ready with a smile and a hello. As a field hockey official I got to know her through the years. At one point I had been in the newspaper for an event and she took the time to drop me a card to congratulate me. I had returned the gesture when she was in an article in the paper and she thought it was great. I hear her voice always on the field through those she had coached and their comments which are similar to the ones she would use when she had coached. She was a truly nice person who will be missed.

This is so shocking! I taught with Nancy our first year out of college. We were part of a 5 woman PE teaching staff at the high schools in Middle County CSD.
Nancy was just a delight to work with and a dear friend. She attended my first wedding and visited our cottage up north.
I will always remember how Nancy grieved at the loss of Janis Joplin . She was a true Flower Child.

As the annual emcee of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, I had the privilege of meeting Coach Cole when she was inducted in 1998, and was always so pleased to see her in subsequent years at the induction dinner. She touched so many lives and had an extraordinary impact on so many people. She was more than a great coach -- she was a wonderful person who leaves a legacy that will endure. I remember speaking with Tracy Fuchs when Tracy herself was inducted in the inaugural Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame class ... I told her she was known across Suffolk as the "Wayne Gretsky of field hockey." She responded by saying, "if that's true, it's only because I played for the greatest coach in history." My deepest sympathies to the Cole family. She will be missed.

I have the best memories of Centereach HS mostly due to my field hockey experience and being lucky enough to have a coach like Nancy Cole. (Ms.Cole). In the early days when our field hockey team didn't even have a field to play on at our own school and hardly anyone came to our games, Nancy made us feel like we were important, valuable young women and everyone loved playing for her. She was tough but in a caring way. She never made anyone feel like they were not good enough. She never belittled us for making mistakes. She just wanted us to play our best and that's what we did. She started a dynasty at Centereach that will always be remembered, like she will always be remembered. "When Those Saints Go Marching In..."

Nancy was an outstanding educator, coach and person. She firmly believed that athletics was a tool to teach the qualities of personal growth, team building and success (in its broadest sense). She was an extraordinary motivator who knew just what to say to make each of her students or athletes feel special, valued or motivated to be their "best self".
For me, I will always remember Nancy as a trailblazer and pioneer of girls' sports during the infancy of Section IX Athletics (and Title IX). When there were significant inequities in women' sports, Nancy raised her voice to challenge the "status quo". Through her hard work and efforts, the future she envisioned for girls in sports became a reality. She helped to make our county's fine athletic programs for girls what they are today. Nancy was a role model for students, athletes, fellow educators, and coaches alike. She exemplified a high level of commitment in pursuing her dreams, demonstrated endurance in overcoming challenges and the ability to overcome any hurdles that stood in the way of accomplishing a goal. Above all, she was a positive, warm and fun loving person.
What a testament to a life well lived! i am honored to have known you and called you friend.
Rest in peace, Mikey Dougherty

First. I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathies to the beloved family of Coach Cole. She spoke often and warmly of you especially sharing the love and tremendous pride she had for her nephew, Ben. My daughter, Shannon had the pleasure and privilege of attending Coach's summer camps since she was in junior high and it was there that she developed her strong passion for field hockey. Coach Cole was such an outstanding role model. At the time, Coach Cole was head coach at Centereach HS and Shannon played for Ward Melville. Every year, the two schools would battle it out meeting in the County finals year after year. Shannon went on to play field hockey in college and when she graduated, she had the pleasure of serving as Coach Cole's assistant coach at Ward Melville. She couldn't have asked for a better mentor and friend. Coach Cole knew plenty about the game of field hockey but more importantly, she taught the girls she coached such important life lessons such as honesty, integrity, pride, and work ethic; values like respect, teamwork, passion, and perseverance, all the while boosting their self esteem and encouraging them to be the best they could be. After a couple of years Coach Cole stepped down and had Shannon take the reins as head coach but continued to attend most every field hockey game, cheering from the sidelines with the same passion and encouragement she displayed when she was coaching. Coach Cole was definitely a legend and an icon and one who certainly made our world a better place. I will forever remember her with gratitude and a smile because she is truly a person I feel so blessed to have known. Heaven gained a very special angel the day Coach passed. May she rest in peace xoxo

Centereach Field Hockey will always be the strongest memories of my high school life. Luckily, I got to continue to speak with Coach after high school when I was lobbying to begin a field hokey program at SUNY New Paltz, and finally, when I began coaching field hockey myself at her Alma Mater Northport. After every game she attended she would stay and speak to me. After a very tough loss to Ward Melville in double overtime she gave me words of wisdom to bring into the locker room for my own team, but as I stood there listening, I knew a little part of that advice was also going into me as the coach. She ALWAYS had the right words, and I struggle to find the right words for her now. I wish I had them Coach. The best I can do is say you will be greatly missed. Hun-Ya-Ha!

The few times we beat Centereach in my 30+year career were special because it meant we beat the best. I always envied, respected, and learned from Nancy. I miss you, my "Ton" friend. I hope you have found peace in this final journey.

Very sad news. Nancy certainly had a remarkable life. We were classmates at Northport High School and though I did not know her well she was known by everyone in the school for her athletic abilities and I am sue we had a few classes together. Gone too soon. RIP

From kindergarten (we were in Miss Mathewson's class) to high school (we played tennis--mixed doubles--against each other nearly every day, weather permitting) to the get-togethers and reunions of recent years (60 years after kindergarten) Nancy radiated the positive energy, the competitive spirit, the enthusiastic friendship that made her such an exceptional and unforgettable person. What wonderful a legacy she leaves.

Nancy was our neighbor for over 22 years but we really got to know her when my daughter Kelsey, showed an interest in playing field hockey as a freshman at Ward Melville high school 5 yrs ago. She was instrumental in helping her get started - even giving my daughter her 1st stick to use and had an obvious love of the game that was infectious. Her enthusiasm and love for all things field hockey was obvious to all who knew her- in the 4 yrs my daughter played varsity FH, Nancy attended many of the games both home and away. Nancy's presence in the world of field hockey will be greatly missed. It was an honor to call her our neighbor, coach and friend. May she rest in peace.

As I attended educational conferences in various states, whenever I mentioned Middle Country School District, someone always said, "Isn't that the district where Nancy Cole coaches field hockey?". I soon began to realize that she was recognized and respected far and wide. She always cared about her team members not just as athletes but as people. She took a career risk by filing a Title IX complaint. Nancy was very well respected by her friends and she had many. She mentored her colleagues. She was bright, witty, and caring. She always loved her little West Highland Terriers. I remember fondly her parents attending field hockey games and bringing one of her Westies. Rest in Peace, Nancy...you legacy will live on in all those you coached, mentored, taught and friended.

Camogie is the Irish equivalent of field hockey. A player is a camog and this is called the Camog's Prayer. I offer it for Nancy Jean, my oldest friend.
Give me, o Lord, a camog’s skill
With strength of arm and speed of limb
Unerring eye for the flying ball
And courage to match them whatever
befall
May my aim be steady, my stroke be true
My actions brave, my misses few
And no matter which way the game may go
May I part in friendship with every foe
When the final whistle for me is blown
And I stand at last at the Judgement Throne
May the great Referee when she
calls my name
Say, “You played with courage, you played the game!”

Nancy always a spring to her step and usually a smile on her face! She had a quick wit and a good take on things. She was loyal to her team and to her friends. I am sorry that we didn't keep in touch after retirement. She will be remembered fondly...

Girls' sports has the prominence it does today because of the efforts of people like Nancy Cole. Her dedication to her players, the concept of team and gender equality are the tenets that I saw as Nancy. So many were blessed to be able to call her 'Coach' and friend. RIP.

Ms Cole was the best coach I ever had. She pushed me harder physically and mentally than I thought I could handle and always knew how to get more out of us. We were scrappy ants that worked stronger together as a team and she was our fearless leader, always motivating and cheering us on, always knowing what to say. I am forever grateful for the work ethic she helped instill in me and for always believing in me. Hun-ya-ha!

By far one of the nicest, professional Field Hockey coaches I have ever known in 25 years of officiating. She radiated kindness to her players and officials at all times. It was always a pleasure to officiate her teams. She will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

I did not know my colleague and friend Sally Cole Tucker's sister Nance. Hearing how Nanc's life was spent supporting women's sports by instilling trust for one another and championing Title IX shows what a huge difference she made in this world. A woman who had great strength of character to be sure.

Ms.Cole was a great role model and an inspiration for all her students and athletes, especially us girls. A true champion and great example of sportsmanship. She believed in us all and helped us learn to believe in ourselves. When I blew out my knee junior year and thought all my hopes and dreams were destroyed she assured me it was just a bump in a long road ahead of me and that I would triumph through it. And she was right. Little did I know then she was about to face a battle of her own, but when she came back she gave me that "see, I told you" smile.

Coach,
You taught me so much more than how to play field hockey. You taught me character, leadership, humor, humility, how to win (a lot) and lose (maybe once or twice ;)) with grace, how to laugh at ourselves and each other, and most of all, how to be part of a team. I also learned how to keep my laughter to myself if it you gave me "the face" or your back was hurting that day. Your office served as a gathering place, a therapy room, and maybe a place to get out of class here and there if we weren't feeling it that day. I stayed on track in my school work, not only for myself, but to make YOU proud. My high school years were shaped by Centereach Field Hockey and your guidance. Your loss is a huge one to me, my family, and anyone who crossed your path. I hope to teach my own children the values you instilled in me, on the field and off. May you rest in peace. Hun Ya Ha!

I write to extend my deepest condolences to Coach Cole's family, friends and players. My interest in field hockey at a young age unfolded into a passion once I met her, and was then blessed to be "an ant" under her and Coach Melfi's direction. She instilled in me so many life-long lessons and I'm forever grateful to have learned from the best. I'll never forget her preseason mailings, sense of humor and love for her players and the game. She created legacy unlike any other that will never be forgotten. Hun-Ya-Ha

Ms. Cole was not only a coach of sport, but of life. She taught me that life is not a dress rehearsal - that today is the only guarantee you get. Live life with joy and passion, as it ought to be lived. Be present, be attentive, be compassionate. Do things honestly, whole heartedly. Don't become anything. Be what you are. Coach Cole saw more in me than just an athlete and helped me to see it too. I can not thank her enough for helping me find my way after my brother died. She was someone who picked me up during my worst and helped me become the best version of myself. HUN-YA-HA!
