Obituary of Nancy Jean Cole
Cole, Nancy Jean of Northport and Stony Brook, on March 17 of her 67th year. Born to the late George and Margaret Cole of Northport, loving sister to Laurence Cole of Northport and Sally Cole Tucker of Hingham Massachusetts and their spouses, Susan Cole and Greg Tucker. Loving aunt to her nephew Ben. A lifelong athlete and passionate field hockey coach, she taught physical education and coached at Centereach and Ward Melville High Schools for 35+years and is the winningest field hockey coach in New York State history with 598 victories, numerous league, county, and Long Island Championships and six state championships. Her programs produced four high school and 15 collegiate All-Americans, at least one US Olympian, and numerous high school coaches- many of whom competed against her towards the end of her career. Always emphasizing humility and teamwork, she was legendary for her ability to make athletes play better by trusting one another and working as a team. A long-time supporter of Title IX, she was a passionate advocate for equal treatment for women's sports. Long Island Newsday Coach of the Year in 2006, she was inducted into the National Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame in 2006 and is remembered by the Nancy Cole Scholarship in Sayville, the Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association Nancy Cole Award, and the hundreds, if not thousands, of players who participated in her programs, as well as her loving family.
